Millions of Brits turning to ocean cruises
14 March 2007

Twice as many Britons are now taking ocean cruise holidays compared to a decade ago, new figures from the Passenger Shipping Association (PSA) show.

In 2006, 1.2 million Britons opted for an ocean cruise, compared to fewer than half that number - 522,000 in 1997.

The ocean cruise seems to be a holiday format more popular with British travellers than among their European counterparts, with Britain seeing the fastest rate of growth in their popularity between 2005 and 2006.

While 450,000 holidaymakers opted for the convenience of starting their cruise at a UK port in 2006, a slightly larger number chose to begin their waterborne tour from an overseas destination.

The most popular seas for cruise breaks, the PSA found, are the Mediterranean, which hosts nearly 40 per cent of all British cruises, and the Caribbean, where 17 per cent of cruise passengers take their holiday.

With a dozen new and refurbished ships to be launched in 2007, the numbers of British holidaymakers choosing to cruise is expected to rise again this year, the PSA noted.
