Travelling careers ahead
03 April 2007
One in five employees in the UK plans to take a career break, a recent study has revealed, while one in four employers offer sabbaticals as a prime perk of the job.
Enviable employees in finance, public sector or insurance are the most likely be able to take career breaks, with the option open to forty per cent, but as many as one in three of all employees would take time out if they could, according to the Direct Line travel insurance study.
'Taking an extended break from work used to be the preserve of a privileged few, but now more and more people are taking time out from their careers to travel,' commented Direct Line's business manager Chris Price.
'Firms are recognising this desire and are offering sabbaticals as a way of recruiting and retaining the best staff,' he added.
Moreover, for some people who catapulted straight into a job after graduation, a career break offers valuable thinking space, Jennette Baxter, spokeswoman for Gap Year for Grown Ups, told the Telegraph.
'When they hit their mid 30s they stop and say: "I'm not sure I want to be doing this",' she explained, adding: 'They need time out to think about it.'
