Easter getaway
03 April 2007

More British people will flee these shores come Easter weekend than ever before, as 2.5 million of us migrate abroad.

Sunny Spain is the top destination for the long weekend, the Association of
British Travel Agents (ABTA) has found, with classic cut-price destination Tenerife leading the way.

Turkey is the next most popular destination, although North African countries Tunisia, Egypt and Morocco are not far behind, offering a more intense flavour of the cultures that lurk beyond the sheltered Mediterranean.

But travellers can expect to begin their holidays surrounded by swarming hordes as Heathrow waves farewell to 550,000 UK passengers, Gatwick processes 300,000 and Stansted serves 225,000 going through departures.

'Getting away from it all is now no longer a dream but a reality for most of us,' ABTA president Justin Fleming commented.

And for those in pursuit of an alternative to a full beach break in the warm but not sweltering temperatures of late spring, city breaks are also a promising possibility.

Top European choices are the cultural capitals of old Europe - Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Rome and Venice.
