Drivers to Heathrow face congestion charge
04 April 2007

Passengers travelling to Heathrow by car could face a congestion charge as the roads surrounding the airport are considered for a toll costing up to £10 per vehicle.

Anticipating that the extended airport will soon generate more airborne traffic, the government hopes to emphasise its commitment to cutting carbon emissions by penalising drivers, reports the Times, after viewing Department of Transport documents on the scheme.

The plans for a penalty charge on drivers passing though Hayes and nearby sections of the M4 are reportedly being developed by consultants appointed by the government and the airport authority BAA.

The idea of a charge for drivers accessing Heathrow Airport was floated back in 2003 by London mayor Ken Livingstone, who wanted 'the death of kiss-and-fly', when family or friends take loved ones to the airport and pick them up on their return.

But alternative routes for accessing Heathrow airport include the Heathrow Express, which whisks passengers from London's central Paddington station to the terminus in 15 minutes.
