The great escape for Easter begins
05 April 2007
With 2.5 million Britons preparing to take off for the Easter weekend, transport authorities have brought in extra capacity to minimise waiting time on the country's roads and in the airports.
Major roadworks on motorways and trunk roads have been suspended to facilitate the through-flow of traffic as city dwellers flock to the hills for the weekend.
Heathrow airport operator BAA has put in nine extra security lanes with a parallel increase in the number of security staff to ensure that passengers are subjected to rigorous security checks are processed as fast as possible.
"We are quietly confident that queues will be kept to a minimum," a BAA spokesman said.
All may not be plain sailing, however - delays are anticipated on the M25, M4 westbound out of London and motorways around Manchester.
But brilliant sunshine, with temperatures around the 20 degree mark in the south-east for Good Friday and the high pressure predicted to hold for the weekend, may help keep tempers sunny nonetheless.
