Madonna touches down in Malawi
16 April 2007

Madonna has flown into Malawi airport, allegedly accompanied by the child she hopes will soon become her adoptive son, David Banda.

Although extensive security measures were in place to keep media at bay, a small child was seen being carried down the steps of the superstar's private jet while a child seat was spied strapped into the back of her car.

The large security presence sparked rumours that Madonna was looking to adopt another child while in the region.

But her publicist, Liz Rosenberg, insisted her visit was linked with the Raising Malawi organization for Aids orphans.

"She is overseeing the building of a children's health care center," Ms Rosenberg told Associated Press, adding: "She is absolutely not adopting another baby."

The suitability of Madonna and husband Guy Ritchie to adopt the toddler is still under assessment by Malawi's authorities.

Although regulations were waived to allow Madonna to live with David Banda in London instead of in Malawi, as is usually stipulated for foreign adoptive parents, child welfare officials from the southern African country will visit the couple's London home in May and December before reaching their final decision.
