Nothing boring about the Severn Bore
20 April 2007
It may not be the number one surfer's paradise in the world but the River Severn in Gloucestershire, England, does have its moments.
A number of surfing enthusiasts flocked to the Severn Estuary, which stretches from Bristol to Gloucestershire, to ride the Severn Bore.
People from across the world attended, including some from world-famous surfing paradise Hawaii.
The Severn Bore is a natural tidal phenomenon that occurs up to 12 times every year.
It happens when the rising tide is forced through a narrow part of the estuary against the current, creating waves which can reach two metres in height.
Each year the surfing of the Severn Bore becomes more popular and in 2006 a new record was set for the longest ever surf.
Steve King, a 41-year-old rail engineer, managed to travel upstream for one hour and 17 minutes.
