Labour Day Golden Week in Hong Kong
27 April 2007

Hong Kong is preparing for an influx of tourists the Labour Day Golden Week.

The Hong Kong Tourism Commission says that it is making special arrangements to prepare the region for thousands of visitors both from abroad and from mainland China.

In order to cope with the increased tourists, extra staff have been called in to work at boundary control points.

'Government departments will deploy appropriate manpower resources and transport facilities to ensure smooth cross-boundary service for visitors,' Au King-chi, Hong Kong's commissioner for tourism told the People's Daily Online.

Labour Day Golden Week runs from 1 May until 7 May and during that time Hong Kong's shops and hotels are packed full of visitors.

Special tours are also organised during the week to offer visitors a view of the region but Ms King-chi says that shopping is the main preserve of many tourists.

'Many retail shops in Hong Kong provide quality service, including 6,300 outlets accredited by the Quality Tourism Services Scheme and more than 5,000 member shops of the Hong Kong Retail Management Association,' she said.

'Visitors can enjoy the convenience and pleasure of shopping freely according to their own preference.'
