Adelaide gets International Beach Volleyball
27 April 2007
Adelaide is to host the Australian leg of the International Beach Volleyball tour.
The event, which attracts thousands of spectators and millions of TV viewers around the world, is set to appear in Adelaide for five years.
Its first showing in the region will be in February 2008, meaning it will return there every year until 2012.
Australia has previously hosted large beach volleyball events, most notably at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
However, authorities say that this event will surpass that in terms of numbers as many thousands of tourists and volleyball enthusiasts are expected to attend.
One hundred teams are to show up for the six-day event which will take place on suburban Glenelg beach.
A temporary 3000-seat arena is to be erected in preparation for the tournament.
