Tasmania appeals to eco-tourists
01 May 2007

Work is beginning on a number of new initiatives in Tasmania which authorities hope will attract even more eco-tourists.

Forestry Tasmania says that it wants to increase its appeal to this kind of tourists while also protecting the environment.

The plans include the launch of a forest walking track and the construction of two suspended bridges.

Officials say that the bridges will be used to cross the Picton and Huon rivers and there will be eco-cottages built along the banks of these rivers.

'You've got something that borders onto one of the great world heritage areas of the world, and so a bit of us get to experience the forests right up close to that as well,' Forestry Tasmania district manager Steve Davis told ABC News Online.

Tourism in the region has already received a welcome boost from the introduction of the Tahune Airwalk.

Since it was built in 2001, officials say that more than 750,000 people have visited it.
