Desert safety increased for tourists
03 May 2007
Officials in Inner Mongolia have established designated tourist areas in two of the region's deserts.
The idea is to provide an environment that will attract tourists with a sense of adventure while also offering some kind of safety net.
Tourists will be completely free to explore the areas but will also be provided with some signs as well as rescue and communications facilities, reports the Xinhua news agency.
'The activities organised by travel agencies in the areas designated by the tourism department will be much safer than independent explorations,' commented Ma Yongsheng, deputy director of the Tourism Bureau of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
Authorities have chosen the Tenggar and Hobq deserts as the tourist regions, with each offering its own unique attractions.
Tenggar desert is home to lake basins, marshes, hills, mounds and plains and is China's fourth largest desert.
Hobq desert measures 16,100 square-kilometres, making it 36,900 square-kilometres smaller than Tenggar, but is equally beautiful and is laced with shifting sand dunes.
