Athens hosts Champions League final
03 May 2007

Football fans from across Europe and specifically England and Italy will soon be descending on Athens for one of the greatest footballing events in the world.

The final of the Uefa Champions League is to be held in Athens later this month and the ancient city will be awash with colour and sound.

On 1 May, Liverpool secured their place in the final by beating Chelsea at Anfield, while AC Milan followed suit the next day by seeing off Manchester United at the San Siro.

It sets up a mouth-watering repeat of the 2005 Champions League final which was held in Istanbul and saw Liverpool win the competition on penalties.

Athens is used to being the site of major events in history and will be a hive of activity in the hours before and after the match.

The city, steeped in myth and history, has a long sporting tradition and its most recent demonstration of this was the 2004 Olympic Games.

Football fans who make the trip for the final may also want to sample some of the abundance of culture that is available and turn a one-night party into a summer holiday.

The 2007 Uefa Champions League final between Liverpool and AC Milan will take place on 23 May.
