Souvenir trends change
03 May 2007

Tourists are continuing to spend billions of pounds on souvenirs while away but their tastes are changing.

New research, which looked specifically at the habits of British travellers, has found that people are no longer returning from their holiday with a bunch of tacky items.

Instead, the majority of holidaymakers return with local treats such as sweets, wines or liqueurs, with 68 per cent opting for these items.

Food is the second most popular choice, with 51 per cent bringing back some kind of delicacy, while works of art (44 per cent) and olive oil (43 per cent) are also popular.

The survey, carried out hotels.com, found that Britons spend a combined total of £1 billion on souvenirs every year, with the typical tourist splashing out £23.40 on three items.

Although most of the items bought appear to show that the majority of tourists are keen to bring home a small piece of culture, other popular products are more to do with fun than anything else.

It has been revealed that 23 per cent buy a hat while abroad, while fridge magnets, tea towels and key rings are still commonly bought.
