New security rules at UK airports
04 May 2007
New security rules are to be implemented at the UK's airports this month (May), with critics claiming that passengers will suffer delays.
The Department for Transport (DfT) has drawn up the rules and sent them out to the UK's hubs, telling them that all liquids must be tested before being allowed onboard, reports the Times.
Security measures have changed at airports in the country since a terror scare in 2006, with passengers required to remove all liquids from their hand luggage and place them in a clear plastic bag.
Now the DfT wants these liquids to be tested using litmus paper in a bid to tighten security further.
London's Heathrow airport has been trialling the new measures and claims that passengers should experience no disruption whatsoever, however, the DfT does not appear to agree.
According to the Times, the government department wrote a letter to the airports stating that the new rules are likely to "cause inconvenience to customers, airport staff and crew travelling through UK airports and will potentially impact the speed of security processing".
An extract from the letter was leaked onto a popular pilot's forum.
