Tourists visit Japanese break up shrine
08 May 2007

A shrine in Kyoto, Japan, has become an unlikely tourism hot spot.

The Yasui Konpiragu Shrine has been in place for 800 years but has only recently become popular with foreign visitors.

Japanese people have been visiting it for as long as it has been in place but it is not usually a happy place to go.

Visitors go to the shrine in order to pray or wish that they will soon be rid of their current partner.

Priests who work at the shrine try to offer some consolation to those who are desperate to split from someone they can no longer live with.

Those who visit are charged £25 for the service and the priests say that their shrine is very popular.

'About 70 per cent of visitors are women,' one of the priests, Hajime Torii, told Reuters.

'Some visitors just want to break up as soon as possible, while occasionally it's parents looking to pray for a child in a bad relationship.'
