Royal opening for UK airport
10 May 2007

The UK's HRH the Duke of York has officially opened Robin Hood airport Sheffield Doncaster.

More widely known as Prince Andrew, he was due to open the hub in March 2007 but severe weather postponed the event.

However, the opening went ahead on the morning of 10 May and those who gathered were impressed to see how the airport has grown since it actually opened its doors in 2005.

In that time, 1.82m passengers have passed through, connecting people from across the world to Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and other regions.

'The development of the airport has been supported by over £15m from the European Regional Development Fund as part of the Objective 1 Programme in South Yorkshire,' said Alison Biddulph, programme director of Objective 1.

'Developing this successful commercial airport has been a significant boost for the economic regeneration of South Yorkshire.

'It has brought major new opportunities for local businesses and people to expand their horizons, he added.
