Horse move Stones' Serbia gig
10 May 2007
Tourists planning a trip to Belgrade in Serbia to see legendary band The Rolling Stones may have to alter their travel arrangements.
The gig, due to be held at the Belgrade Hippodrome racetrack, is still going ahead, only the Hippodrome will not be the venue.
Initially, The Stones were due to make their first appearance in Serbia at the site but, following a complaint by an animal protection society in the country, it has been moved.
The change of location is down to the health and safety of 300 horses which are kept in nearby stables.
Animal welfare professionals were concerned that the horses would suffer as a result of the concert and Mick Jagger and co were keen to avoid this.
'The concert will not take place on the Hippodrome,' manager of Music Star Production Raka Maric, told Reuters.
'The Rolling Stones' band members are great animal lovers. We didn't manage to convince The Stones' management that the concert would not harm the horses.'
Although 14 July will see The Stones perform for the first time in Serbia, the band has tried to hold gigs in the country before but with little success.
A concert in 2003 was cancelled after the prime minister of the time Zoran Djindjic was assassinated, while another in 2006 was axed when Keith Richards injured himself on holiday.
It is unclear where the gig will now be held but fans are urged to keep an eye on the band's website for details.
