1st A380 rolls off production line
15 May 2007
The world's first commercial Airbus A380 has rolled out of the hanger, complete with the livery of carrier Singapore Airlines.
It took 100 painters 21 days to complete the task in hand, with each working shifts to make sure that the 3,100-square-metre fuselage was accurately painted.
The work was completed in Hamburg, Germany, and the unveiling of the plane is a sign that the A380 is set to begin dominating our skies soon.
More mandatory tests are still to be carried out this summer but these have nothing to do with the A380 in general and are merely standard tests for a new aeroplane.
Singapore Airlines will be the first commercial carrier to get its hands on an A380 in October 2007 and the airline will also be the first to carry paying passengers on a real flight.
News that the first plane has got to this stage will be well received by Airbus which has had to endure a string of setbacks during production of the A380.
The firm had to put back the dates that the planes would be ready following some difficulties in production but this first plane is now said to be two weeks ahead of schedule.
