Ecotourism growing
15 May 2007

Ecotourism is a growing market and the International Ecotourism Society (Ties) has named a number of destinations as world leaders.

During a conference in Oslo, Norway, Ties' executive director David Sollitt pinpointed Australia and Costa Rica as 'great examples' of ecotourism being a successful business.

He also highlighted the beach resorts of Thailand and the jungle lodges of Kenya as good examples of environmentally-conscious tourism.

However, Ties is keen to see the good example, set by the destinations mentioned, maintained and followed by other regions.

'A critical element is to have follow-up,' said Kelly Bricker, chairwoman of the Ties board. 'Even with some certification program, there has to be check-ups by people who understand the criteria.'

She praised Australia and Costa Rica for implementing certification schemes and warned that without these types of projects, eco sites may suffer from being allowed to slip into disrepair.
