A new piece of security technology is being introduced at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport.

Officials hope that the new scanner, named Security Scan, will speed up security procedures as well as being more passenger-friendly as hand searches are not needed.

It works by using millimetre wave reflection technology that produces an of the body contours.

This will then highlight if anyone is carrying a prohibited item on them and the appropriate action can be taken.

Airport officials are keen to point out that the Security Scan should not be confused with the Body Scan which is used by Dutch Border Police.

The Body Scan works by emitting x-rays to see if any items have been swallowed. Security Scan will only be able to tell if something is being smuggled beneath clothes.

Currently the new scanner is voluntary and only two are in place at Schiphol airport.

However, in the coming months, a total of 17 will be installed and airport officials may decide to make them a mandatory part of the boarding process.
