Ancient London boat race
16 May 2007

Hundreds of people will be descending onto the banks of the River Thames for the famous Doggett's Coat and Badge Race.

The traditional race has been taking place on the Thames since 1715 when Irish actor Thomas Doggett decided to hold it to mark the crowning of George I.

Boats involved in the race are crewed by Watermen who have only recently completed their apprenticeships.

Each is competing for the coveted scarlet coat with a silver arm badge and breeches which distinguishes the winners from the rest of the crowd.

It is widely agreed that Doggett's Coat and Badge Race is the oldest sporting contest in the world that is still in existence today.

The race begins at London Bridge and ends in Chelsea, taking in four miles of the Thames.

Visitors to London will be able to see the Doggett's Coat and Badge Race on 16 July.
