Baby born onboard
29 May 2007
A flight from Munich to Atlanta was redirected after a woman gave birth onboard.
The unnamed woman went into labour during the flight and air stewards made an announcement to passengers asking if there were any doctors available.
Two Americans, Dr Robert Vincent and Dr Dieter Gunkle came forward and proceeded to deliver the child.
Both men worked tirelessly in less than perfect conditions to help the woman through labour 10,000 feet above the ground.
The doctors were forced to use any tools they could get their hands on to deliver the baby and had to battle hard to get the baby out safely.
'We tied the rope [umbilical cord] with some rope from somewhere, we cut it with something - I don't know what it was because you're not allowed knives and things on aeroplanes any more,' Dr Vincent revealed to ABC News.
He went on to say that the child initially did not have a heartbeat and was not breathing but he was eventually resuscitated.
Both mother and child were taken to a hospital in North Carolina where they are said to be in good health.
