Austrian Airlines announces baggage changes
30 May 2007

Austrian Airlines has announced plans to simplify its excess baggage regulations.

The carrier will now have a five zone system which will determine how much additional money a passenger needs to pay.

Currently, passengers pay a standard price for a piece of luggage that is one kilogramme over the permitted weight regardless of where they are travelling too.

However, Austrian Airways has decided to change this as of 1 June 2007 so that people travelling further will pay more than those on short journeys.

The airline believes that this will make the whole process more transparent and will allow passengers to know in advance how much they will be charged.

Regulations regarding sports equipment are also due to change, with charges being calculated solely on size, weight and destination.

However, scheduled passengers will be allowed to take a pair of skis or one snowboard with them without charge.
