Vancouver celebrates the light
04 July 2007
The Canadian city of Vancouver's Celebration of Light is the largest fireworks competition in the world and attracts close to 1.5 million spectators every year.
In 2007, Spain, Canada and China will compete during four nights of spectacular displays over Vancouver's English Bay.
From the last week in July, leading fireworks companies from each of the three countries will perform a 25 minute show, exhibiting the latest pyro-musical techniques and innovative firework technologies.
Spain will open the competition on 25 July with Ricardo Caballer's cinematically scored 'Fireworks and the 7th Earth', before Canada's Archangel Fireworks takes to the stage on 28 July with a jazz-themed display named 'Take Five to Jive'.
China's Jiangxi Province Lidu Fireworks company will change the pace on 1 August with 'The Time Machine', featuring music from Klaus Badelt. The grand finale, which will feature performances from all three countries, will be held on 4 August.
According to the competition's organisers, the best vantage points in the city are the English Bay, Kitsilano, Vanier Park, Jericho Beach and West Vancouver. The event is free to watch from any of Vancouver's public parks and beaches.
