Ireland goes barmy for Muff Festival
06 July 2007
For the madder among you, the small town of Muff, in Ireland, is the place to be during August, as it plays stage to a mixture of barmy competitions, parades, parties and copious beer consumption.
During the Muff festival, people from all across north-west Ireland display their passion for making merry. For the slightly more refined, there is a finest garden competition, a talent show and the Wild Irish Rose competition, where the most beautiful entrant is awarded the honour of leading the annual parade.
Once the locals let their hair down, all manner of hilarity breaks loose with pig races, digger races, sheaf throwing contests, treasure hunts and a 'Strongest Man in the North-West' lorry pulling competition.
Meanwhile, the pubs will be host to all manner of bizarre events during the evenings. In one locale, a carnivalesque court room, fitted with impromptu judge and jury will preside over the audience's fun complaints, with 'defendants' facing £5 charity fines if they cannot talk their way out.
This festival is incredibly loopy and more than fun, a definite remedy for anyone with low spirit and absolutely free.
