Hong Kong celebrates in style with Mid Autumn Lantern Celebration
31 August 2007

Reflecting the grandeur of the city of Hong Kong, the Mid Autumn Lantern Celebration will see a 67 metre long fire dragon emblazoned with thousands of burning joss sticks take to the streets for three nights from 24 to 26 September.

Hong Kong's fire dragon is one of the many highlights of the 15-day celebration, which lasts from 23 September until 7 October, and sees the cityscape transformed into a canvas of colorful carnivals, lantern displays, dancing and singing.

Although it was originally a celebration of the harvest, the Mid Autumn Lantern Festival occurs at the same time as the eighth moon in the Chinese lunar calendar is at its fullest. Visitors can join the locals in eating yuek buen (moon cakes) and gathering around white paper lanterns at areas all over the region where there is a perfect view of the full moon.

Carnivals and parades will take place all over the city and surrounding region, with night time harbour cruises available for those who want the ultimate view of the night sky. On 1 October, revelers will also be able to enjoy the National Day Fireworks, which commemorate the 58th anniversary of the People's Republic of China.
