A380 makes maiden flight
25 October 2007
The Airbus A380 has taken to the skies on its first commercial flight, leaving Singapore at 01:00 BST on 25 October and landing in Sydney, Australia at 08:25 BST the same day.
Over 450 people boarded the airliner's maiden commercial voyage, including a ten-month-old boy and a 91-year-old man from Singapore.
Australians accounted for 28% of the passengers, while 14% were from Singapore, 11% were British and 8% hailed from America. All passengers bought their seats on the flight to Sydney at a charity auction.
Russell Balding, CEO of Sydney Airport, said: 'I am especially delighted that Singapore Airlines has chosen Sydney Airport as the destination of this very special flight.'
He added: 'Many of the airlines that fly out of Sydney are committed A380 customers, which means that Sydney will be seeing many more A380 flights in the years ahead.'
The A380 can carry up to 850 passengers and, according to Airbus, is more efficient than its counterparts in the aviation industry, burning 17% less fuel than the next largest aircraft.
Full scheduled services between Singapore and Sydney using the A380 will begin on 28 October.
