'Levitating' man floats US visitors' boats
25 October 2007
US tourists and residents alike have been enthralled by a man appearing to levitate in front of some of the country's best known landmarks.
The Dutch illusionist, known as Ramana, seemed to float in mid-air in front of the Whitehouse in Washington and in New York's Times Square.
With only a stick held in his left hand to prop up the magician, onlookers were left stunned as he hovered over a metre above the ground.
Ramana, real name Wouter Bijdendijk, is a well-known figure in his native Holland and has performed his illusions for Queen Beatrix.
He has also been honoured in India - where he reportedly attended the Academy of Magical Sciences - with a Golden Cloth, one of the highest privileges the country can bestow upon a westerner.
And levitation is not the only trick in Ramana's repertoire, as he has also entertained tourists around the world with his mind-reading skills and an ability to 'fly' up to ten metres above ground.
