29 October 2007

Hong Kong welcomed over 2.12m visitors in September, 15.9% more than in the same month of 2006, the tourism board has announced.

Between January and September this year over 20.3m people visited the Chinese region, an increase of 9.6% on the previous year.

The popularity of Hong Kong with long-haul travellers continued to be in evidence in September, with people from Canada accounting for 26% of visitors and Britons making up 16%.

However, tourists from New Zealand (32%) made up the largest proportion of visitors to Hong Kong.

Over half of the travellers who visited Hong Kong in September stayed in the location for at least one night and around 42% made a 'same-day' trip.

Hong Kong is a special administrative region of the People's Republic of China and is located on the south-eastern tip of the Asian country.

It is essentially an archipelago consisting of Hong Kong Island, Lantau Island, Kowloon Peninsula and the New Territories among hundreds of other islands.
