Web check-in 'beneficial to all'
30 October 2007
The potential for passengers to check in for flights on the internet is positive for both airlines and their customers, according to an aviation industry spokesperson.
In a similar sense to e-ticketing, which is now widely used by carriers and passengers, online check-in makes travelling easier and also helps airlines cut costs, a representative for the Air Transport Users Council said.
James Freemantle from the air traveller consumer group said that the reduction of costs for airlines through initiatives such as web check-in could lead to cheaper fares for customers.
He went on to explain that another advantage of the phenomenon is practicality, as the removal of the need for on-site check-in can make the airport process much simpler for travellers.
"For passengers it's very easy to check in online, they don't have to wait in queues in the airport, they can do it at their desk, get their boarding pass and arrive later for the flight," Mr Freemantle said.
"I can't see any disadvantage to it. It's the way the industry's going and it's good for airlines and good for passengers."
