Tunisian island 'hotspot of 2008'
31 October 2007
The island of Jerba off the coast of Tunisia is set to be the top international destination of 2008, according to online travel community TripAdvisor.
In the internet group's annual travel barometer, which is based on criteria including search activity and postings by TripAdvisor members, Jerba was named the most promising spot for next year, followed by Makandi Bay in Egypt.
Phangnga, Thailand; Kovalam, India and Sabaudia, Italy rounded off the list of top five emerging destinations for 2008.
Another finding of the TripAdvisor annual survey indicated that beach holidays are still the most popular option for travellers, with 64% of the online travel community saying they would rather relax by the sea than do anything else.
British tourists appear to be the best at switching off on their breaks, with 65% claiming they never check their email or voicemail while on holiday, compared to 42% of all travellers.
The prospect of mobile phone use being allowed on planes was given a less than warm welcome by survey respondents, with 90% of Brits and 78% of worldwide travellers disapproving of the idea.
