Ale to the chief of beer
31 October 2007
The availability of a good tipple is often an important aspect of a hotel for visitors and occupants at Four Points by Sheraton establishments are not likely to be disappointed, as the chain is the first in the world to have appointed a chief beer officer (CBO).
Earlier this year 28-year-old Scott Kerkmans, a former brewer and co-founder of Draft magazine, was made the world's first chief officer of beer.
His duties include organising happy hours and other alcohol-related events at Four Points hotels, talking to guests about beer and attending various brewing festivals and conferences around the world.
Over 7,500 applications were made for the position and a performance review this month showed that Mr Kerkmans is coping well under the pressure to perform.
Sandy Swider, vice-president of Four Points by Sheraton Hotels, said: 'He is making significant contributions to develop the CBO title and he continues to "wow" his colleagues with consistent innovative suggestions for system advancements and improvements.'
Speaking to the New York Post, the chief beer officer himself gave his insights into the current state of the industry, claiming that the most exciting trend for alcohol enthusiasts to look forward to is the combination of beer with food.
'People are starting to realise that beer can be just as complicated and pair with as many foods as wine does,' Mr Kerkmans said. 'The more people realise that, the more we'll see that on menus.'
