The Dubai hospitality sector will be boosted by more than 100 new hotels in the next decade, according to reports.

Khalid bin Sulayem, director of the Dubai department of tourism and commerce marketing, said that the number of hotels in the city will rise by 29 per cent by 2017.

This will bring the number of hospitality establishments from the current 439 to 554, Gulf News reports.

At present there are 46,775 units of room capacity in hotels and apartments in Dubai - this is set to increase to 127,100 with new developments in the next ten years.

Mr Bin Sulayem also revealed statistics covering tourism in Dubai in the first half of 2007, with the hospitality industry taking 6.4bn dirhams (£830.4m) in revenue.

'Dubai hotels and hotel apartments played host to 3.4m guests during January-June period,' he added. 'They stayed 10.2 million nights.'
