'Keep driving documents with you' when abroad
09 November 2007
Holidaymakers who hire cars abroad are being warned to ensure they take all the necessary documents with them but avoid leaving them inside the vehicle.
Paperwork such as a driving licence, insurance policies and emergency contacts are all important for drivers abroad but insurance firm esure says that leaving items in the car is risky.
Adrian Webb, head of corporate communications, said that if a car was to be stolen with these documents inside, a traveller would not only have lost their transport but could have had their identity taken too.
'If you're hiring a car abroad, you should always take your driving licence. You won't get a car abroad unless you take your driving licence,' Mr Webb warned.
He added that a survey carried out by the firm found that 'it's perfectly possible that if a thief steals your car they can also steal your identity with the driving licence, insurance documents, those kind of things' if drivers leave them in the glove box.
Figures from the RAC Foundation show that around 3m British drivers head to Europe either by ferry of via the channel tunnel each year.
