Emirates makes history with aircraft order
12 November 2007

Dubai-based airline Emirates has confirmed an aircraft order that it claims is the largest in the history of civil aviation.

The carrier has signed contracts to receive 120 A350s and 11 A380s from Airbus as well as 12 Boeing 777-300ERs.

With a total value of $34.9bn (£16.7bn), the order will make Emirates the world's largest operator of the Airbus A380 and the Boeing 777 aircraft ranges.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, chairman and chief executive of the airline, confirmed the order at the tenth Dubai Airshow event, where he signed contracts with Airbus bosses Tom Enders and Lee Monson.

Upon signing the deals, Sheikh Ahmed said: 'Once again, Emirates is making aviation history.'

He added: 'Dubai is investing billions to secure its future as a leading centre for business, tourism and air transport on the global stage. Likewise, Emirates is investing in a fleet for the future, in order to support Dubai's development, as well as the growth of air travel demand around the world.'

The Emirates fleet of 111 planes currently flies to 97 cities in 61 countries.
