Quebec prepares to celebrate 400th birthday
13 November 2007

The Canadian city of Quebec is preparing to celebrate its 400th year of existence in 2008, with celebrations beginning on New Year's Eve 2007.

A number of events and celebrations will be held throughout the year in Quebec City, concluding with a closing ceremony on 19 October 2008 that will feature a one-off performance by the Cirque de Soleil.

One of the highlights of the summer schedule will be the 'Image Mill', a giant-screen multimedia show created by Quebecois writer and director Robert Lepage.

Mr Lepage will tell the story of the city using multiple projections on a 600-metre-wide screen based on the theme of the number four.

The summer festivities will culminate in major celebrations between 3 and 8 July to commemorate the date that explorer Samuel de Chaplain official founded Quebec in 1608.

Espace 400e, a themed exhibition pavilion located in the Old Port of Quebec, will form the base for the celebrations and host an exhibition in tribute to the millions of people that have passed through the city over its 400 years.
