Insurance 'more important' for high-altitude skiing

British winter sports fans who plan to travel to some far-flung locations in search of 'guaranteed' snow have been warned of the potentially high cost of medical treatment in some destinations.
According to American Express, resorts in Canada, the USA, Japan, Russia and Chile will be among the most popular in the 2007-08 skiing season.
However, locations such as these carry some of the highest medical costs in the world, the company said.
In the USA it can cost up to £25,000 to treat a broken leg, according to American Express, making it imperative for travellers to check that their travel insurance policies cover them for all eventualities.
Joanne Field, marketing manager for American Express Travel Insurance, said: 'We are seeing more and more skiers and snowboarders travelling further afield to higher resorts to ensure good snow conditions.
'With more than a million Britons skiing each year and with one in ten suffering an injury on the slopes, good quality insurance will be vital for destinations like the USA and Japan where a hospital room can cost over $10,000 (£4,830) per day.'
