Eurostar prepares to say goodbye to Waterloo
13 November 2007
Rail operator Eurostar is preparing to bid farewell to Waterloo station, the hub that has hosted its cross-channel services for 13 years, with the final train leaving the terminal this evening.
The rail company will effect an overnight transition of its operations tonight and its first service will leave the upgraded St Pancras International station on the morning of 14 November.
Today a number of celebrations have been held at Waterloo to mark Eurostar's last day at the terminal, including live music shows and performances by local theatre and dance groups on the station's departures concourse.
Richard Brown, chief executive of Eurostar, commented: 'We are celebrating 13 momentous years since the birth of Eurostar and I want to thank all those who have supported us, travelled with us and worked alongside us.
'We are hugely proud to have developed into the world's leading international train operator and pleased that the millions of travellers that we have brought through our terminal have also helped in the local regeneration of the Waterloo and South Bank areas.'
Eurostar launched its first service from Waterloo on 14 November 1994 and since then has carried over 81m passengers on more than 230,000 trains.
