One-bag rule 'to be lifted'
14 November 2007

Restrictions allowing air travellers to carry only one piece of luggage on flights are set to be lifted in the new year, reports claim.

Transport secretary Ruth Kelly is set to use a speech to the Airport Operators Association to announce that rules will be eased to allow fliers to take two bags on flights, according to the Financial Times.

The one-bag rule has been in place since 2006 following a series of security scares but has proven unpopular with airlines and travellers.

British Airways chief executive Willie Walsh once said that the regulation was 'damaging the UK's reputation around the world from a business perspective'.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Transport told the Guardian: 'We have said we will be working closely with the industry on the one-bag rule.

'Before lifting it we need to be convinced that security can be maintained.'
