Virgin prepares to boost business in Jamaica
16 November 2007
Virgin Atlantic will expand its operations in Jamaica this weekend as it commences a codesharing agreement with the island's major airline.
On 18 November Virgin and Air Jamaica will begin to share flight codes on the British carrier's services through Kingston and Montego Bay and the Caribbean airline's connecting flights between the two cities.
This agreement means that Virgin Atlantic passengers will be able to choose from four direct services a week to the island, more than any other airline, and also access connecting flights between Kingston and Montego Bay.
Steve Ridgway, chief executive of the UK airline, said that Virgin has a 'big commitment' to the Caribbean and claimed this expansion will offer a significant benefit to the Jamaican tourism industry.
He added: 'We intend to offer a comprehensive network of connections between our three UK airports Gatwick, Heathrow and Manchester and Jamaica via our US and Caribbean gateways, and in future we will look to build up connecting traffic via Jamaica to other points in the Caribbean region.'
Virgin Atlantic launched direct flights from London Gatwick to Kingston at the end of October and has been operating services between Gatwick and Montego Bay since last year.
