Say happy birthday to Sao Paulo
20 November 2007
Visitors to Sao Paulo in January will have the opportunity to pay tribute to the city as it celebrates its anniversary.
Sao Paulo was founded by Jesuit missionaries on 25 January 1554 and on this date every year inhabitants and visitors celebrate with musical performances and some very special cakes.
The place to find the best cakes is the Bixiga neighbourhood, where in 1985 an 1,800-metre confection was baked, making it into the Guinness Book of World Records.
Every year local residents uphold the baking tradition, with a metre worth of cake made for every year Sao Paulo has been in existence. There is so much tasty pastry available that visitors are given some for free.
Sao Paulo is located in south-east Brazil and is the largest city in the country by population, with over 11m people living within its limits.
Its cultural and entertainment calendar is marked by a number of major events, including the annual Formula One Grand Prix at Interlagos, Sao Paulo Fashion Week and the Sao Paulo Gay Parade, which attracted more than 3m visitors to Paulista Avenue in June 2007.
