US Airways unveils new transatlantic service
21 November 2007
US Airways has announced that it will launch its first flights to Heathrow next year, from its base in Philadelphia.
The carrier will initiate the service on 29 March using the Airbus A330 aircraft, which offers 29 envoy and 259 economy seats.
This new Philadelphia-Heathrow connection will be the seventh new transatlantic route launched by US Airways since 2006 and is made possible by the new EU-US Open Skies agreement, which was finalised earlier this year.
Once the new service gets underway, US Airways will fly to 20 European destinations from its Philadelphia hub.
President Scott Kirby said the airline was 'very excited' to enter the Heathrow market and described the new connection as a 'valuable service' for the Philadelphia community.
'We were fortunate to identify a unique opportunity to acquire landing and takeoff rights at Heathrow and given Heathrow's importance as a European gateway as well as its close proximity to London for business travellers, we are pleased to take advantage of that opportunity.'
US Airways currently operates a network of 390 daily flights to 108 international destinations, which is used by 19 million people every year.
