Singapore welcomed some 911,000 tourists in October, 6.2% more than a year earlier, the country's tourism board has revealed.

New figures show that some 8.5m people visited the city-state in the first ten months of the year.

The Singapore tourism board is targeting a total of 10.2m tourists for the whole of 2007, following 9.7m visitors in 2006.

October's strong figures were attributed to a number of factors, including school holidays and airline promotions.

The country also saw a boost in exposure recently when Singapore Airlines became the first carrier to launch commercial flights using the Airbus A380, which is now being used to fly from Singapore to Sydney.

Demand for hotels in Singapore continued to climb in October, with room occupancy rates standing at 89%, compared to 87% in October 2006.

The south-east Asian state is targeting 17m visitors a year by 2015, a mission that will be helped by the hosting of events such as the Formula One grand prix, which begins next year, and new attractions such as the two casino resorts currently under construction.
