Lapland prepares for 120,000 visitors
27 November 2007
Lapland in northern Finland is preparing itself for 120,000 visitors all hoping to experience the 'official' home of Father Christmas.
Over the coming holiday season, regular flights, chartered trains and some 580 organised tours are expected to carry travellers of a range of nationalities to the Arctic Circle.
Visitors are expected to come mainly from Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Russia and Japan.
People from Finland itself are expected to account for a third of the market, while Britons are set to make up a quarter of the audience.
The town of Rovaniemi claims to be the true home of Father Christmas in Lapland and is expecting 50,000 tourists over the festive season and some 249 charter flights.
Tuula Rintala Gardin of the local tourism office told the AFP that the visitors will be entertained by Santa's workshops, dogsledding excursions, trips to see the northern lights and the region's pristine natural surroundings.
