Emirates begins work on Australian resort
27 November 2007
Emirates has announced the commencement of work on its new resort in Australia, due to open in two years' time.
The $69m (£33.3m) Wolgan Valley resort and spa in the Blue Mountains will see 4,000 acres of farming land transformed into a valuable conservation area.
Only two per cent of the land will be used for the suites, spa, pool and conference facilities that will comprise the Emirates establishment.
The rest will be gradually restored to its natural state, with a range of flora and fauna being reintroduced to the area.
Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, chairman and chief executive of Emirates, said: 'We are delighted to see this project taking shape after many years of careful planning.
'The search for this location began in 2004 and we are now well on our way to making Emirates Wolgan Valley resort and spa an important asset for Australian tourism, the local community and Emirates.'
The resort, which is Emirates' first outside Dubai, will welcome its first guests in late 2009, most of whom are expected to be international visitors.
