Baggage management system to be launched in India
29 November 2007
Sita, a company that provides IT solutions to the aviation industry, is to launch its new passenger-baggage reconciliation system in Bangalore, India next year.
The new scheme uses barcodes and wireless local area networks to ensure that baggage gets to its destination on time.
Passengers are expected to benefit from the introduction of the new technology, as it is hoped to reduce aircraft delays through quicker offloading of bags and automatic redirection of items that have missed connections onto alternative flights.
The system will be introduced at Bangalore international airport, in India's 'Silicon Valley', which is set to open on 30 March 2008 and handle 10m passengers in the first year of operation.
Elyes M'Rad, Sita's regional vice-president, said: 'This is a significant milestone for the air transport industry in India and will set a benchmark for the future development of airports.'
Bangalore international airport's chief operations officer, Marcel Hungerbuehler, added: 'Nothing is more frustrating than being separated from your bags and we intend to reduce this risk to the minimum possible through the deployment of state-of-the-art technology which will give airlines and passengers maximum visibility on baggage movements through the airport.'
