Eurostar 'benefiting from green concerns'
30 November 2007
Eurostar is seeing the benefit of growing concern among travellers about the effect that the aviation industry is having on the environment, according to the Association of British Travel Agents.
Spokesperson Sean Tipton stressed that there are initiatives being pursued to tackle climate change within the aviation industry, such as giving passengers the opportunity to offset the emissions related to their flights.
However Mr Tipton also emphasised that there are alternatives to air travel, a fact that Eurostar appears to be benefiting from.
'Eurostar's business is increasing substantially and part of the reason for that is concern about the environment,' he said. 'It is just getting more and more high profile.
'If you don't want to fly, rail is an increasingly attractive option.'
Mr Tipton said that a number of factors have improved in rail travel recently, including cost and convenience, with high-speed rail providers announcing that they will be operating more cooperatively and enabling passengers to use a single ticket on different networks.
Eurostar recently launched high-speed services from St Pancras International, which can carry passengers from London to the centre of Paris in two hours 15 minutes.
