Hotels 'getting more unusual'
04 December 2007
Hotels around the world are embracing unusual designs and amenity offerings to attract young, adventurous travellers, according to Forbes.
A list compiled by the magazine includes a number of hospitality establishments that have adopted an unconventional approach, including a structure formed entirely of ice and snow in Quebec.
The Ice Hotel is constructed each winter from 6,800kg of snow and 226kg of ice and guests are provided with insulated sleeping bags to protect them from the temperatures, which can fall below zero.
Underwater hotels are also becoming popular, with the Jules Undersea Lodge currently operating in Key Largo, Florida. Here, guests have to scuba dive to a depth of more than six metres before they reach the main lobby.
The HydroPalace is set to open in Quingdao, China in 2009 and will be anchored in the Yellow Sea.
Hotel industry analyst Bob Crow told Forbes that younger travellers tend to travel more than the older generation and are often looking for a unique experience.
As a result of this, businesses in the travel industry are 'looking for an edge', Mr Crow claimed.
