Emirates arrives in Houston
06 December 2007
Emirates has completed its inaugural service from Dubai to the city of Houston, Texas in the United States.
The Boeing 777 plane, carrying 266 passengers, touched down at George Bush intercontinental airport on 3 December, where it was greeted by a water cannon ceremony on the runway.
Emirates said the occasion marked the beginning of a long-anticipated connection between Dubai and the southern United States.
The airline currently operates a service to New York, with three flights a day between Dubai and the American city, and said that it was keen to expand its operations into the southern and western portions of the country.
Chairman and chief executive Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum said: 'Emirates has looked forward to bringing business and tourism traffic to America's south and south-west and specifically to Houston and the state of Texas.
'With the growing demand, particularly from discerning business travellers, we are confident that the new service will prove to be very popular and we look forward to serving the region with our growing fleet.'
Emirates claims that its new service is the fastest connection between Texas and the United Arab Emirates, with a 15-hour flight between Houston and Dubai and a return of around 17 hours.
