Canberra airport set for $250m upgrade
07 December 2007
Holidaymakers flying in to Canberra airport over the coming years will see the hub undergoing rapid improvements following the confirmation of a $250m (£108m) works programme.
This development, which will be the biggest in the airport's 81-year history, will see a doubling in the number of check-in counters from 16 to 32.
Canberra's Club lounge capacity will be quadrupled to more than 6,000 square metres, while airport parking facilities will be boosted by an extra 1,300 spaces.
Stephen Byron, managing director of the airport, welcomed the confirmation that Qantas will be using the new terminal and said that there are high hopes for the future of Canberra following the development.
'Our new terminal is designed to achieve two key objectives,' he said. 'Firstly, to cater for future growth, and secondly to make Canberra the most modern, user-friendly, internationally capable airport in Australia.'
The decision to proceed with the development was prompted by improvements to the airport's runway and government commitment to upgrade roads in the Canberra region, factors that Mr Byron described as 'the final pieces of an infrastructure jigsaw'.
